Kahlan and Richard rescue a young boy with the power to know a person’s secrets by looking into his eyes, and must keep him from using his ability for the enemy’s evil purposes.

Upon witnessing Darken Rahl’s soldiers capturing a Listener, who has the ability to read others’ thoughts by looking into their eyes, Richard, Kahlan and Zedd devise a plan to rescue him. After the rescue, Zedd uses the soldiers to find Rahl as Richard and Kahlan set about returning the Listener, a young boy named Renn, to his step-father. Renn grows to trust Richard and Kahlan after they risk their lives to protect him. Using his abilities, Renn discovers Richard and Kahlan’s secrets including their feelings for each other and reassures each of them that the feelings are mutual. Not wanting them to be harmed, Renn leaves with his step-father and is sold off again to Rahl’s soldiers, who have captured Zedd for helping a D’Haran traitor escape. Richard and Kahlan find Zedd and Renn, and help them fend off the soldiers. They journey to Thandor, where Renn is then left in the care of the Sisters of Light.
